The area of jurisdiction for Corolla Ocean Rescue also includes the Currituck Sound, which separates the mainland from the Outer Banks. The Sound is composed of brackish water and has a wind-driven tide. Corolla Ocean Rescue employs a 19-foot commercial-width Carolina Skiff with a 90-hp Johnson outboard motor, capable of responding in very shallow water.
The Currituck Sound used to be a prime hunting spot as Corolla was home of many hunting clubs. For example, the Currituck Hunt Club, Whalehead Club, Pine Island Club, and Swan Island Hunt Club. This area is still known for its wide variety of wildlife, specifically its waterfowl.
